Frequently asked questions.
What is child-led speech therapy?
Child-led speech therapy is a neuroaffirming approach where we follow the child’s interests, strengths, and sensory needs to build authentic communication. Instead of adult-directed tasks, we use play, movement, and connection to support language development—especially for autistic children, gestalt language processors, and AAC users. This approach reduces pressure and creates space for meaningful, spontaneous communication.
How is child-led therapy different from traditional speech therapy?
Traditional models often focus on structured drills, flashcards, or prompting children to say specific words. Our child-led, neurodiversity-affirming speech therapy centers on the child’s autonomy, regulation, and connection. We use the child’s play, movement, and natural gestures, echolalia, or scripts as the foundation for growth.
Do you work with non-speaking or minimally speaking children?
Yes. We specialize in supporting minimally speaking autistic children, children who use AAC (augmentative and alternative communication), and those developing communication through gestalt language processing (GLP). We honor all forms of communication—gestures, scripts, vocalizations, signs, or device use—and never treat speech as the only valid goal.
Can this approach help with behavior challenges?
Yes—because we view behavior through the lens of nervous system regulation, not compliance. Many behaviors are actually stress responses, and our work begins with helping each child feel safe, supported, and understood. When a child is regulated and connected, communication naturally expands.
